About me

About me

About me

About me

COLLABORATION. STYLE. ENERGY. INTEGRITY. RESPECT.

These words represent my my artistic goals for all of my projects, regardless of the origin of the musical score, the experience level of the groups I lead, or the part of the world I find myself working in.

Though I coach singers in repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Mazzoli and everything in between, my passion for the music of the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly Handel, and for the extraordinarily rich performance traditions of Argentine tango music, inform and inspire my creative approach to all musical periods and to the premieres that composers entrust me with.

Historically informed performance practice, certainly that of the baroque era but also of non-Western and popular traditions, has brought us to a wonderful moment for artists who wish to create magic in the theatre and concert hall from the intersection of personalities and ideas.

I see the conductor’s role as an informed sculptor who guides this process to coherence, rather than dominating it through personal whim or enforcing an academic manifesto.

My favorite writer on music, the late Charles Rosen, described a style as “a mode of understanding,” the aspect of music that allows musicians to “agree” on a shared language. The rhythms of a baroque or Latin dance, the colors of a bel canto line, the composer’s ability to satisfy or subvert expectations. This can be coaxed very quickly out of non-specialist performers provided they approach their work with focus and an open mind. (https://youtu.be/gsz5eA7jUog)

Musicians are uniquely equipped to be a positive example of respect and flexible leadership in the world, and it is humbling to continue the work of those who set this example for centuries. I seek colleagues who believe in and strive to embody these principles too, at a time in history when such an example is so urgently needed.
